about

I’ve heard this song a million times. Infidels is one of my favorite albums. But my last listen was one I won’t soon forget because it punched me in the gut and brought me to tears and I pored over the words again and again with my ears and my eyes and eventually my own voice, wondering how it was possible that this song that was released in 1983, the year I was born, was not written about the exact moment in time where I was standing.

Actually, that’s a pretty generous use of the word standing.

Truthfully, I’ve been stumbling around trying to find my feet in the midst of a pandemic and chronic illness and sometimes I feel like I’ve just let this keep me from the protests happening out in the streets around me.

And I know that this is just a homemade recording of a song that someone else wrote and it isn’t what you’d call “using my voice” in any way that doesn’t feel half-assed or vainglorious, but I guess you could consider it the official record of me planting my feet. Because even if it is falteringly, at best, I know where I unflinchingly do stand and that is in support and pursuit of justice and freedom for Black lives.

Let’s
DEFUND THE POLICE and
TAKE AWAY THEIR LICENSE TO KILL.

Thanks so much for listening,

about

Coralee Nashville, Tennessee

"Coralee and the Townies are a Lexington, Kentucky based band of a genre they’ve self-defined as Honky Tonk Soul, and it’s a fitting description, as the sextet whoops and weeps with traditional authenticity and contemporary energy, with Coralee’s husky vocals front and center and the Townies providing a righteous, raucous rootenanny soundtrack around her." ~Brian Baker (CityBeat) ... more
